Timber truss and roofing related glossary

SABS provides a range of standards covering the demands of the Timber industry, from quality management systems to test methods for specific materials or parts. These help organizations to enhance customer satisfaction, meet regulatory, safety and reliability requirements, and ensure consistency of quality throughout the supply chain.

SANS 10243 is the standard covering the manufacture and erection of timber trusses.

Institute for Timber Construction South Africa

The ITC-SA Mission

  • To raise standards in the Nail Plated Timber Roof Truss Industry.
  • Monitor adherence by ITC-SA members of Industry related standards.
  • To promote ITC-SA members interests through appropriate advertising.

International Truss Systems

International Truss Systems is a full system supplier to the prefabricated timber truss industry and works through a network of licensed truss manufacturers, providing punched metal connector plates, sundry components and timber engineering software.

ISO 9001

The ISO 9000 family of standards relates to quality management systems and is designed to help organizations ensure they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders. The standards are published by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, and available through National standards bodies. ISO 9000 deals with the fundamentals of quality management systems, including the eight management principles on which the family of standards is based. ISO 9001 deals with the requirements that organizations wishing to meet the standard have to fulfill.

South African National Accreditation System

The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) is recognised by the South African Government as the single National Accreditation Body that gives formal recognition that Laboratories, Certification Bodies, Inspection Bodies, Proficiency Testing Scheme Providers and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) test facilities are competent to carry out specific tasks.

SANAS certificates and their accompanying schedules are a formal recognition that an organisation is competent to perform specific tasks.

South African Bureau of Standards

SABS is a statutory body that was established in terms of the Standards Act, 1945 (Act No. 24 of 1945) and continues to operate in terms of the latest edition of the Standards Act, 2008 (Act No. 29 of 2008) as the national institution for the promotion and maintenance of standardization and quality in connection with commodities and the rendering of services.

SANS 1900 is the standard covering the manufacture of Monoplaner Roof Trusses (nail-plated).

South African Technical Auditing Services (Pty) Ltd was formed in 2002. SATAS is a firm of professional people rendering quality control services to different industries.

SATAS is accredited by The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) as a Product Certification Body for manufacturers of wood and wooden products.

Terms and Conditions define how a contract is implemented for a Customer organization.
They define:

  1. What is being sold under the contract;
  2. The price of the items being sold;
  3. How orders are paid for;
  4. How the items are delivered;
  5. How the items are constructed and or erected and conditions attached thereto.

Typical notes applicable to our independent inspector issuing of the Regulation A19 Completion Certificate:

  1. It must be noted that this is an Engineering Certificate for the roof structure only and that we take no responsibility for the strength of the supporting masonry or foundations or any aesthetic or water tightness issues, with respect to roof covering or ceilings.
  2. The owner is responsible for the appointment of an Engineer to ensure that all supporting structures are stable and capable of adequately supporting the completed roof structure.
  3. We neither take responsibility for the anchoring (tying down) of roof trusses to the supporting structure. This is the responsibility of the building contractor to ensure that the anchoring detail be complied with as per SANS 10243
  4. We take no responsibility for any latent defects which could not reasonably be recognised during the inspection of the roof structure.
  5. We do not take any responsibility for any geyser installations not complying with the required standards in SANS 10243
  6. Solar geyser systems must be provided for in the truss design.
  7. We take no responsibility for any interference of the support structure or roof structure after the roof inspection
