Lightning ground strikes per square km, in South Africa, also known as ground flash density, have more than doubled in the last 15 years

Surge arrestors and Lightning arrestors can be combined into the same unit.

A surge arrestors purpose is to safely divert overvoltage’s and lightning induced surges on power lines. It does this by transferring surge energy to earth thereby ensuring the resultant voltages over the terminals are maintained at acceptable levels.

A surge arrestor, or a lightning arrestor for that matter, will not stop or absorb lightning. A lightning protection system would need to be designed for this purpose.

Nevertheless, every home in South Africa should have at least one surge arrestor installed.
